WHY WE WRITE ESSAYS IN ART BASED STUDY?
Today we had an online session about what is the PURPOSE in writing academic essays in art?
Many profound answers has been highlighted and found myself in some of them.
My purpose for writing, academically writing essays is embody practical knowledge, experiences into the word. Through experimental writing I completely want to articulate what I am doing in my practice, explain how to develop my practice, making reflection on my work and critically observe how I am 'feeling' on that field, that means that I want to give to the reader an explanation about some somatic understanding for my research, how much I am engaged in those ideas of exploration and something about the context I am referring to. Expressing ideas academically, structurally, on philosophical basis by observing, reflecting practice about myself and the others makes my experience much worth it. In TED talks Walter Hood talked about how great things happen when we exist in each other world, I would add that great things happen through opportunity to learn, read from the others and ourselves, through our experimental writing and dancing, when we make mark on community, put things in a right place and still without judgemental eye build an understanding about that purpose. Helen mentioned that for the movement artist is sometimes quite difficult to see their practice through the words and that is the fact that sometimes communicating ideas either embodied movement experiences through words can give a slight headache, we really need to work on it and through sharing, engaging, reading, conversation we can get that confidence on our practice by inviting someone to our space and make this moments translatable.
I really like your reflections here Sandra of how we exist in each others worlds and it reminds me of the Bantu concept of 'Ubuntu' which embodies a simplified idea of 'without you I cannot exist' and showing how the interactions we have embody our existence at their core. They could be audiences we exist with, or out communities of practice and essay are another way to assert such existence through dialogue.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sam for this reply and I think we simply can not achieve a lot without presence of The Others, if we want to survive we can not become an island. Unfortunately pandemic showed some thing differently and people really changed but they changed because of the huge amount of insecurity in the world but in the core I still trust that thing will find their way and we will exist only through the dialogue.
DeleteHi Sandra! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us! I really love the way you see writing as a way to connect with one another. I often tend to think of writing as a solitary act...but thank you for refreshing my awareness of the communicative element of it. I believe we were in different online classes. I also shared my thoughts on this on my blog :).
